Sierra Madre Revisited collection, 1988-1988.

Typescript narrative and photographs of a 1988 expedition by thirty-six Apaches and 6 historians and guides to follow the route taken by Loco's band of Chiricahua Apaches 106 years before and to visit places in Mexico important to the history of their ancestors. The narrative, written by Alden Hayes, switches between the historical and contemporary journeys. The photographs, taken by Karen Hayes, shows the contemporary trip, camping and the Mountain Spring Dance.

Alarmed by the Battle of Cibecue in 1881, many Chiricahua Apaches left the reservation and fled into Mexico. Most returned to San Carlos by 1883, but others followed Geronimo and didn't return until Geronimo's surrender to Gen. Crook at Canon de los Embudos in the Sierra Madres of Mexico.
